Swedish Massage- example sequences

Back & hips - client is prone

  1. Effleurage (both hands) both sides of spine. Start at sacrum towards neck and over shoulders (light return)
  2. Repeat – cover all back in upward & outward motion
  3. Friction muscle adjacent to transverse spinous processes. Start at Posterior Superior Iliac Spine up to Occipital Condyles.
  4. Petrissage upper back & shoulders (gentle pick-up)
  5. Laterally effleurage waist lumbar area
  6. Friction iliac crests (simultaneously)
  7. Petrissage waist (Pick-up, Pick-up and squeeze & Wring)

Hips

  1. Wring into glutei
  2. Friction (using knuckles)
  3. Tapotment into shoulders, lumbar region and buttocks (towels can be used). Avoid spinous processes.
